Outline (in English)

[Course outline] The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, or Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has come to be recognized as a common challenge for the human society, which is a manifestation of the severity of various problems we as a species are faced with. In light of this current situation, this course focuses on the concept of "sustainability" so as to provide students with an opportunity to learn about basic scientific aspects of environmental problems and also to learn about relevant social issues in an attempt to provide a holistic view of human impact on the global environment.
[Learning objectives] Objectives of the course are: to acquire basic scientific understanding of various environmental problems; to understand related social problems; and to develop a personal opinion about various problems the human species face with a holistic understanding of the human impact on the global environment.
[Learning activities outside of classroom] In addition to attending classes, students are expected to review contents of individual lectures, thoroughly utilize distributed materials and the online learning support system. Standard amounts of time to be spent for this purpose are two hours each for preparation and review.
[Grading criteria/policy] Final grade will be determined based on quizzes (40 %), final assignment (40 %), and participation/in-class contribution (20%).
