Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
This class is focus on the current situation and history of Okinawa, which still has many U.S. military bases, Japan's security policy, international relations with China and the Korean Peninsula, historical relationship with the Pacific islands, and the public sentiment against the construction of a new base in Henoko. Students can learn the process of Okinawa suffered the most severe damage in Japan during the Pacific War, killing one in four citizens of the prefecture, and remained under US administration until it returned to Japan in 1972. While the US strategy for Asia and U.S.-China relationsis are changing, the US military bases are being imposed on Okinawa at the convenience of the Japan government, and the deployment of the Self-Defense Forces is progressing in the name of preparing for a Taiwan emergency. Learning about Okinawa should also help us understand the modern history of Japan and its international relations with Asian countries.
