Outline (in English)

This course is suitable for students with basic knowledge of the German language who wish to improve their ability to communicate in German over 3 Semester: Target groups are student who want to participate in short language course in Vienna (by Hosei University-Global Education Center), exchange program of Hosei University as well as Working Holiday experiences in any German speaking society. In the course, students try to get ability for basic, minimal skills for communication in German and combine German as a foreign language with cultural, historical and sociological issues, thus opening up interesting new perspectives.
【Learning Objectives】
・To develop an understanding of a wide range of topics relating to life, culture and society in German-speaking countries and to express and explain these in German.
・Able to express their own opinions and take part in discussions on abstract topics in German.
・Able to write texts of a certain length in German. 
【Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)】
・The standard preparation and revision time for this course is at least two hours each.
・There are prescribed preparation and review tasks.
・Assignments outside of class time will be given on a case-by-case basis.
・In addition to the above, please read the newspaper (daily) or listen to the news as much as possible. It is advisable to make effective use of the internet and social networking sites for German-speaking media.
【Grading criteria】
The course will be judged on the basis of a combination of 70% of ordinary marks (active participation and contribution to the class, presentations, submitted assignments) and 30% of every class assignments.
On the basis of this grading system, students who have achieved at least 60% of the objectives of this course will be considered to have passed the course.
