Outline (in English)

Reincarnations of the "Artificial Human": Homunculus, Olympia, Golem, and the Prosthesis
In this class, we will trace the emergence of the "artificial man" in German-speaking cultures, and then consider how this motif has been "reincarnated" in contemporary culture. We will also learn about the social, cultural, and historical contexts in Germany (and Japan, the U.S., etc.) that have contributed to the transformation of the post-incarnation image.
Students will be expected to have completed the required assignments after each class meeting. Your study time will be more than four hours for a class.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following:
Term-end report: 40%, in class contribution: 60%
