Outline (in English)
English 3 builds upon the skills and knowledge gained from English 1 and 2 and aims to provide students with further opportunities to think critically and express their opinions on a variety of topics using English. In this course students will spend time using English to learn about American culture from a number of diverse perspectives. Students will learn about American culture through various sources of information and will incorporate a variety of topics about which they will express their opinion. In addition, students will also practice the fundamental English skills necessary to accomplish the above.

English 3 builds upon the skills and knowledge gained from English 1 and 2 and aims to provide students with further opportunities to think critically and express their opinions on a variety of topics using English. In this course students will spend time using English to learn about American culture from a number of diverse perspectives. Students will learn about American culture through various sources of information and will incorporate a variety of topics about which they will express their opinion. In addition, students will also practice the fundamental English skills necessary to accomplish the above.
到達目標Goal
Students will read and understand rather simple English texts without relying too much on dictionaries for understanding.
Students will learn to express their own opinion in speaking and writing, including how to examine content from a critical thinking perspective.
Students will not only learn about American culture, which continues to have a large impact on the world, but will also be able to apply that knowledge while improving their English skills.

授業の進め方と方法Method(s)(学期の途中で変更になる場合には、別途提示します。 /If the Method(s) is changed, we will announce the details of any changes. )
Warm Up activities will include listening practice from various English websites. Various target language objectives will be emphasized during each class period. For example, while reading from text, an emphasis may be placed on building vocabulary as well as the comprehension of passages. When presentations are the focus, an emphasis will be placed on using the appropriate posture and body language.
In Week 13, comments and explanations are given for assignments, reports and oral dictation quizzes for the classes held to that point.

授業時間外の学習(準備学習・復習・宿題等)Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
Students are expected to complete weekly reading assignments from either the textbook or other supplemental sources as well as doing periodic research on a topic for the following class.
University guidelines suggest preparation and review are around 4 hours a week for a two-credit course and about an hour a week for a one-credit course.

An English-Japanese/Japanese-English dictionary is highly recommended for each class session. Other supplemental readings and handouts will be provided at the discretion of the instructor.
成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Grading criteria for this course will be based on the following:
*Class participation: 25% ( including the timely completion of homework assigned in the previous class.)
Individual and small group presentations: 25%
Oral dictation quizzes, Mid-Term and Final Semester Test: 50%
*Please note that in principle no more than three absences are permitted throughout the term. Without a valid reason (i.e. medical emergency/family problem ) a fourth absence will result in failure for the term.
