Outline (in English)
While exercising the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English in an integrated manner, you will be exposed to artistic expressions of social activism in the world. You will learn the language presented in the works as well as the messages conveyed through the activism and its social, historical, and political backgrounds. You will also have a chance to consider the relationship between art and social activism, namely, the role that various forms of art play in maintaining, restoring, regaining, or enhancing social justice in the world. Feedback will be provided in interaction throughout the course and for your reflective writing and class presentations within a week of submission. Your work will be assessed through participation, group and individual presentations, and reflective writings.

While exercising the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English in an integrated manner, you will be exposed to artistic expressions of social activism in the world. You will learn the language presented in the works as well as the messages conveyed through the activism and its social, historical, and political backgrounds. You will also have a chance to consider the relationship between art and social activism, namely, the role that various forms of art play in maintaining, restoring, regaining, or enhancing social justice in the world.
到達目標Goal
This course is designed to develop your English proficiency further as you learn about various cultural and social practices of the world. You will also learn to think critically about important issues that surround us today and develop the ability to effectively express your own ideas, feelings, and opinions. The main goal is communication, not translation or accuracy. You will become aware of some issues related to human rights and able to express your ideas and questions about them in English. You will also gain an enhanced understanding of global cultures.

In class you will have a chance to appreciate artistic expressions of social messages. You will also be asked to exchange your ideas and feelings and discuss relevant issues in pairs or small groups. You will also give presentations about your chosen humanitarian activist(s). You are encouraged to actively participate in the task/problem-based learning (TBL/PBL) and group work. Oral feedback will be provided in interaction throughout the course. Written feedback will be offered for your reflective writing and class presentations within a week of submission.
This class involves a number of highly interactive activities. Depending on the pandemic situation, class may be delivered through a combination of face-to-face and online instruction. Please check the announcement to be made on Hoppii before the start of the course.

You must finish assigned reading or listening tasks and other creative assignments before coming to class. As you will be discussing your ideas, reactions, and questions, you are expected to become familiar with the topic of the week and come ready for discussion. Work before and after the class for at least one hour each week.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
You will receive a formal evaluation of your work at the end of the term. The grade on a late assignment will be lowered. You will be graded on:
1) Attendance and participation (20%)*
2) Group presentation (25%)
3) Individual presentation (25%)
4) Reflective writing (15%)
5) Final paper (15%)
* Regular attendance is essential in order to benefit from the interactive nature of this course. You will not be able to pass this course if you miss more than three class periods a semester except in extreme circumstances.

Most students have very little opportunity to use English outside of class. In order to maximize the chance, this class will be taught as much as possible in English. It's all right to make mistakes; focus on communication! Participate actively and express your ideas openly.

Be prepared to use Hoppii, Google Classroom, and Zoom with your university account and check your university email daily. You will need to use a headset with a microphone when you attend class on campus.
