Outline (in English)

Course Outline

Following the Spring Semester, this course aims to further improve the students’ English four skills. Through the textbook, students will be able to gain knowledge and a critical understanding of world politics, law, human rights, culture, religions, sustainability, etc. This will help students improve their vocabulary, and they will be able to obtain knowledge about phenomena by learning about various cultures of the world.

Due to the acceptance of Ukrainian refugees after the Soviet Union’s invasion of Ukraine and the increase in the number of foreign technical trainees, Japan’s plurilingual and pluricultural awareness is increasing more than ever.

In addition to the textbook, we will use various media such as newspapers, magazines, websites, and videos to help students deepen their understanding and increase their knowledge and vocabulary. Students would be able to summarize their thoughts in English more smoothly.

Learning Objectives
(1) By understanding English texts as they are without translating them into Japanese, students will be able to speed up their reading comprehension and quickly grasp the gist of the text. (2) Students will be able to understand the meaning of sentences accurately, even if they come across unknown words without referring to a dictionary. (3) Students will be able to express their thoughts in English smoothly. (4) Students will be able to deepen their knowledge of international problems and current affairs through cultural issues.

Learning activities outside classroom
University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course, but this is by no means sufficient. At least two hours should be devoted to preparation and review. Students are frequently asked to answer questions in class, so preparation is essential. In addition, submission of a reaction paper through the Hoppi system is mandatory every time, which will affect the grades. The reaction paper will be used as a communication tool between the student and the teacher. The teacher will check the submission, make any corrections or answer questions and return it to the student as feedback through Hoppi.

Grading Criteria/Policy
Reaction paper (through the Hoppi system) 2 x 14 = 28%
In-class participation: 32% (pair work, group work)
Mid-term vocabulary test: 20%
Term-end examination: 20%

The minimum passing grade: 60%
Maximum absences per semester: 4 times

More than 15 minutes delay will be recorded as a late mark, and two late marks will be counted as one absence. If students have poor health conditions, they must notify the teacher before the class starts.
