Outline (in English)
● Course outline
The purpose of this course is to enhance students' skills in reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Each unit provides two different perspectives on the same topic written by a non-Japanese author and a Japanese author, respectively. By reading the textbook, students will learn what is "standard" for people in Western countries such as the United States. Thereby, it would help students learn how Japan and Japanese people are viewed by non-Japanese people in the world.
● Learning Objectives
(1) By understanding English texts as they are without translating them into Japanese, you will be able to speed up your reading comprehension and quickly grasp the gist of the text. (2) You will be able to understand the meaning of sentences accurately, even if you come across unknown words without referring to a dictionary. (3) You will be able to express your own opinion in well-formed paragraphs. (4) You will be able to ask questions in English smoothly. (5) Your listening skills will be improved by learning the right pronunciation and how to pronounce words properly. (6) In addition to learning English, you may be able to learn cultural differences and recognize how Japan is viewed by non-Japanese people in the world.
● Learning activities outside of class room
University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course. However, students are required to spend at least two hours before and after the class. Students are frequently asked to answer questions, so preparation is essential. In addition, submission of a reaction paper through the Hoppi system is mandatory every time, which affects the grades. The reaction paper will be used as a communication tool between the student and the teacher. The teacher will check the submission, make any corrections or answer questions and return it to the student as feedback through Hoppi.
● Grading Criteria/Policy
Reaction paper (through the Hoppi system) 2 x 14 = 28%
In-class participation: 32% (pair work, group work)
Mid-term vocabulary test: 20%
Term-end examination: 20%
The minimum passing grade: 60%
Maximum absences per semester: 4 times
More than 15 minutes delay will be recorded as a late mark, and two late marks will be counted as one absence. If students have poor health conditions, they must notify the teacher before the class starts.

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
Goal
Which item of the diploma policy will be obtained by taking this class?

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Changes following student comments
