Outline (in English)
This class aims to develop the abilities to read and listen to English materials and learn how to collect intelligence and to express their opinions in English. The materials are about culture and society of modern America.
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
To acquire the ability to read English sentences accurately.
To acquire the ability to listen to English sentences accurately.
To Improve basic grammar skills.
To Increase vocabulary.
To acquire the ability to think logically.
Before each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the relevant chapter from the text.
Your required study time is at least one hour for each class meeting.
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following
Term-end examination: 60%
in class contribution: 40%

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
現代米国の文化や社会について書かれた英文の読解を通して、複数のパラグラフから成る英文を正確に理解するためのリーディング・スキルと、音声から英語を聞き取って理解するリスニング・スキルを身につける。同時に、英語を通して情報を得、自分の意見を持つことができるようになることを目指す。

・英語の文章を、パラグラフの構成を意識して正確に読む能力を身につける
・英語の文章を正確に聞き取る能力を身につける
・基本的な文法力を向上させる
・語彙力を増やす
・論理的な思考力を身につける

1章につき、2回の授業を充てる。
1回目の授業は、Reading 1の読解（大意把握、精読）と教科書の設問を解く。
2回目の授業は、Reading 2の読解（大意把握、精読）と教科書の設問を解く。
いずれの授業でも、本文の内容に関わるプレゼンテーションおよびディスカッションをおこなう。課題の提出やフィードバックは学習支援システムを通じて行う。

発表担当者は、発表資料の作成をおこなう。
本授業の準備学習・復習時間は、合わせて1時間を標準とします。/University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
期末試験 60％
平常点（授業内での発表、発言、小テスト等を含む）40％
4回以上欠席した場合は、成績評価の対象にならない。
授業開始から30分以上の遅刻は欠席となる。
発表担当者が正当な理由なく準備を怠ったり欠席したりした場合は、単位を認定しない。
授業内での取り組みが著しく不十分であると判断した場合は、欠席と見なす。
