Outline (in English)
This class aims at enhancing your English-reading and writing skill. You'll be given various types of articles from newspapers or magazines. Try to pick out theme and support parts of the article and understand what the writer means.
You have to prepare for the class activities for at least one hour before each class.
You will be assessed with: final test 30%, Assignments 50% and Participation in Class Activities 20%.

授業の概要と目的（何を学ぶか）Outline and objectives
reading とwritingを主眼に英語スキルの向上を目指します。テキストとして、新聞・雑誌の記事をプリントして配布します。基本文法と語法を確認しながら文を読み、英語でまとめる練習をします。さまざまなジャンルと長さの英文を正確に読み取ることを目標に、流れに沿って論旨をつかみ、必要な情報を取り出しましょう。
到達目標Goal
To read various fields and various length of articles and pick out key words/key phrases.
To understand the topic of the article, following the the flow of paragraphs.
To understand the suggestions and opinions of the writer and to give comments on them.

The address of the article we use in the class will be announced, or handouts will be given in the classroom. You will read them, check vocabulary and pick out important words/phrases, then make up summaries.
You will also have to read news articles of your own choice and write weekly report paper. This is preparation for Presentation session for the Autumn Term. Read various kinds of news report and find out WHAT field of news you are interested in.
Assignments are checked and returned in the next class.

You are required to prepare for/review class activities for one hour for each class. Read the given article, check vocabulary and pick out keywords/ key phrases, review grammar points. You also have to read a news article besides the given article(more than 500 words) and write weekly reports on it.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
期末試験30%、授業時の提出物50%、授業時の発表20%として評価する。4回以上欠席した場合、評価の対象としない。
You will be assessed by: Final Test 30%
Assignments (Weekly Report and Classwork paper)50%
Class activities (active participation in the
classwork) 20%
If you don't attend 4 or more classes, you will not get the credit.
When you come late for the class 3 times, it will be counted as one absence.

評価票の提出について：レポートする記事の選択は「各自の興味あるもの」としていますが、秋期のプレゼンテーションの下準備で、各自の興味の方向性をしぼることが目的です。単発でおわる記事ではなく、シリーズとして追いかけられそうなもの、続報が手に入りやすそうなトピックを選んでください。とくに、人物の紹介記事などを扱う場合は、ほかにどんな切り口がありそうか、広く展開できそうなものかを考えて、レポートに取り上げるかどうかを判断するとよいでしょう。(スポーツ関連で試合の結果を報じるものなどは不適といえます。）
When you choose articles for Weekly Report, try to take up topics which you can follow up further information on them. Weekly Report is a preparation for Presentation in the Autumn Term. Please think from what aspect you can talk about the topic.

授業には必ずハードコピーの辞書または電子辞書を携帯してください。通信機器は使用しないでください。語義の確認だけではなく、用例を見て言葉の使い方をチェックするために、辞書を活用していただきたいと思います。
