Outline (in English)

(Course outline)

The objectives of this course are (1) to help students acquire the necessary knowledge about the structure of English sentences, such as; topic sentences, supporting sentences, and concluding sentences. In addition to the textbook, various kinds of reading articles from newspapers, websites, and videos will be provided in class to strengthen the students' vocabulary and horizons. (2) Students are encouraged to read English sentences directly without translating them into Japanese each time (slash reading/chunk reading).(3) To strengthen the students' listening and speaking skills, pronunciation practices will be given.


Learning Objectives

(1)By understanding English texts as they are without translating them into Japanese, you will be able to speed up your reading comprehension and quickly grasp the gist of the text. (2) You will be able to understand the meaning of sentences accurately, even if you come across unknown words without referring to a dictionary. (3)You will be able to express your own opinion in well-formed paragraphs. (4)You will be able to ask questions in English smoothly.(5) In addition to learning English, you may be able to deepen your knowledge of international issues and current affairs.


Learning activities outside of classroom

University guidelines suggest preparation and review should be around an hour a week for a one-credit course. However, students are required to spend at least two hours before and after the class.


Grading Criteria/Policy

Mid-term report: 10%
Reaction paper (through the Hoppi system) 2 x 14 = 28%
In-class participation: 22%
Mid-term vocabulary test: 20%
Term-end vocabulary test: 20%

The minimum passing grade: 60%
Maximum absences per semester: 4 times

More than 15 minutes delay will be recorded as a late mark, and two late marks will be counted as one absence.

If students have poor health conditions, they must notify the teacher before the class starts.
