Outline (in English)

《Course outline》
In this course, we examine meritocracy through the critical reading of The Tyranny of Merit by Michael Sandel. On the one hand, meritocracy is appealing because it gives us the freedom to realize our life plans as long as we foster our talents and contribute to our society. On the other hand, meritocracy has brought about many social problems, such as great inequality and poverty, the misrecognition of "losers," and the social division between "winners" and "losers." We examine appeals and problems of meritocracy from the perspective of modern political philosophy (normative political philosophy). After the course, students can construct their own views on meritocracy and related social issues.

《Learning objectives》
The goals of this course are the followings:
-1. To understand appeals and problems of meritocracy.
-2. To construct your own (normative) view on meritocracy and related social problems.
-3. To become able to discuss social issues with others.

《Learning activities outside the classroom》
Students will be expected to read the text and construct their own views on discussion questions before each class. Completing the required assignments after each class meeting is also expected. You are recommended to study more than four hours for each class by the standard set by the Japanese government.

《Grading Criteria/Policies》
Your overall grade in the class will be decided based on the following standards:
-1. Group discussions and Required assignments: 50%
-2. Term-end report: 50%
