Outline (in English)

The new geological age of the "Anthropocene," proposed by chemist Paul Crutzen in 2000, is becoming one of the biggest topics not only in the natural sciences but also in the humanities and social sciences, as a concept that embodies the modern world in which human activities since the Industrial Revolution have caused global climate change and humans and nature have become indistinguishable in many areas. It is becoming one of the biggest topics not only in the natural sciences, but also in the humanities and social sciences. When a huge storm hits cities and plastic becomes the new stratum, cultural anthropology, which has defined "human" as a cultural being that is separate from nature, is required to undergo a fundamental self-transformation. In this class, we would like to think together with you about what a new anthropology facing the Anthropocene might be like.
Before/after each class meeting, students will be expected to spend four hours to understand the course content. Grading will be decided based on the term-end report (50%) and in class participation (50%).
