Outline (in English)

【Course Outline】
"History of the Institutional Formation of Violence Control and Security in Modern States "
This seminar cultivates curiosity about European history, introducing students to historical studies as an academic discipline.
This year, we will analyze the formation of modern states and societies from the perspective of violence control and reorganization of social order. Then, based on this analysis, we will explore the characteristics each existing nation state has taken on in the process of historical changes from a primitive tribal state.

【Learning Objectives】
At the end of the course, students are expected to understand Douglass North’s theory of the state and the institutional approaches as well as Armitage’s historical analysis of the concept of "civil war".

【Learning Activities Outside of Classroom】
Before/after each seminar, students will be expected to spend eight hours for preparation of text reading and individual research.

【Grading Criteria /Policies】
Final grade will be calculated according to the following: the degree of understanding of the course content reflected in the abstracts of the text reading submitted after each seminar (60%) and the degree of research ability and achievement (40%) shown in term papers.
