Outline (in English)

This course is aimed at students who expect to obtain basic understanding and skills on computer and networks, such as creating data, sending/receiving data over the information network, searching, and other information processing. Practical exercises for business document processing, creating presentation materials, and web pages are included. Further, basic understanding of data processing including numerical data analyses is studied through example exercises.

Learning objectives:
By the end of this course students are expected to master skills and knowledge on:
1) using personal computers and their networks;
2) data exchange procedures over computer networks;
3) authoring, editing, and searching data;
4) creating business documents and materials for presentation;
5) authoring simple web pages;
6) basic numerical data processing and analyses;
7) simple programming and developing environment.

Learning activities outside of classroom:
Reading textbook sections prior to the class and reviewing materials practiced in the class;
(Preparation and review of this course assumes a standard time of two hours)

Grading criteria/policy
Practical exercises on example problems in every class (Submission is essential) - 70%;
Examination problems at the end of spring/fall semester - 30%.
If the submission of regular exercises falls short of 70% of required total numbers without any explained causes such as illness, the term-end examination is disqualified.

Equipment student needs to prepare:
In this term, all the class activities are expected to be personally performed at the Computer Exercise Room. However, in case of uncontrollable conditions, it may be necessary to use Hosei Learning Support System (Hoppii) for substitute studies. Follow the instructions posted on the Learning Support System. In such cases, students are expected to prepare a personal computer capable of running Windows and Microsoft Office applications (any version of or later than Office 2013 but not the on-line edition nor the Mac edition).
