Outline and objectives

The aim of this course is to improve both listening and presentation skills. You will practice speaking English in pairs and small groups and learn the structure and delivery of presentations. You will make presentations individually and in small groups during this course.

There are 14 classes in total. All classes will be face-to-face.

Goal

At the end of this course, students should have improved their listening and oral communication skills. Moreover, they should have the tools, experience and confidence to present their own ideas clearly and effectively. Students will learn the importance of good posture, eye contact, gesture, voice projection and delivery in basic presentations.

In and out of class listening activities/exercises using textbook audio/visual resources and Communicative Language Teaching methods. Students will work individually, in pairs and in small groups in giving presentations. Moreover, students will give peer-to-peer feedback on presentations and will be provided with feedback from the lecturer on an ongoing in-class basis and via Google Classroom (Students will be asked to submit PowerPoint presentations on Google Classroom.

Introductions. Course overview and explanation of syllabus, course goals, guidelines and grading.

2[対面/face to face]:Unit 4 - The Visual Message - Effective Visuals.

Students will learn about preparing various types of visuals, such as graphs, pictures and charts.

3[対面/face to face]:Unit 5 - The Visual Message - Explaining Visuals.

Students will learn about common problems and solutions of presenting visuals.

4[対面/face to face]:Country Comparison Presentation Preparation and Practice.

Students will prepare and practice a country comparison presentation in small groups

5[対面/face to face]:Group Country Comparison Presentations 1.

Students participate in a small group presentation for the whole class and receive both instructor and peer feedback.

Students will learn about the functions of the introduction, body and conclusion. Prepare a favourite restaurant speech

Students give an individual presentation for the whole class and receive both instructor and peer feedback.

9[対面/face to face]:Unit 6 - The Story Message - The Introduction.

Students will learn about the importance of a solid introduction in a presentation, particularly the
presentation skill, the slide
design focus and the verbal
message focus.

10[対面/face to face]:Unit 7 - The Story Message - The Body - Evidence.

Students will learn how, in the body, each main point is explained in detail using evidence.

11[対面/face to face]:Unit 7 - The Story Message - The Body - Transitions and Sequencers.

Students will learn how transitions and sequencers connect the ideas in the body into a coherent message.

12[対面/face to face]:Unit 8 - The Story Message - The Conclusion.

Students learn about the importance of a solid conclusion in a presentation to summarize and emphasise what they want the audience to remember.

13[対面/face to face]:Group Product Comparison Presentations 1.

Students participate in a small group presentation for thewhole class and receive both
instructor and peer feedback.

14[対面/face to face]:Group Product Comparison Presentations 2 - Feedback / Course Review / Final Test.

Students complete group presentations and review
activities including a final
review test. Students will be
asked to reflect on what they
did well and what they could
improve on in future
presentations.

Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)

Students should review and prepare for class as instructed. This includes completion of homework listening activities, planning and practice of presentations for in-class activities (2-4 hours).
