Outline (in English)
Students will move away from English for examinations and develop English skills to broaden their perspectives and deepen their knowledge as university students. Students will read articles about various topics in English and summarize their own opinions by referring to them in order to improve their reading comprehension, analysis and communication skills in English and to practice critical thinking.

受験のための英語から離れ、大学生としての視野を広げ、知識を深めるための英語力を養う。様々な社会的トピックについて英文で読み、それを参考に自分の意見をまとめることで、英語での読解力、分析力、発信力を高め、批評的思考の訓練をする。
到達目標Goal
By the end of the course, students should be able to do the followings:
-to gain practical knowledge of English grammar, vocabulary, and
phonetics
-to read English sentences at a certain speed and understanding them
in the order they appear
-to develop critical thinking and express their opinions concisely in
English
-to increase interest in different social systems and cultures

テキストを使用し、英文記事を音読しながら、4技能（特にリーディング）を向上させる演習に取り組む。さらに、読んだ記事を参考にしながら、記事に関連した問題に対する自分の意見を英文でまとめ、提出する。授業中はアトランダムに指名されるので、英文中の単語や表現についてはあらかじめ予習しておくことが要求される。ほぼ毎回、授業の最初に単語や英作文の小テストを行う。課題の提示や、小テストの内容についての連絡事項は、教室内だけでなく、HoppiiやGoogle Classroomなどのオンライン学習支援システムを使って行うこともある。授業中に行った小テストはピア・グレイディングで点数をつけ、ライティングなどの課題については教員がコメントと点数をつけて、すべて返却することでフィードバックを行う。

授業時間外の学習（準備学習・復習・宿題等）Work to be done outside of class (preparation, etc.)
Students will need to prepare for the articles they read in class. It is not necessary to come with a verbatim English-Japanese translation, but students are required to look up any words they don't understand. There will be a vocabulary quiz almost every week, so be prepared to take it if necessary. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 1.5 hours for each class meeting.
