This course builds upon basic English writing skills and empowers students to transition from constructing simple paragraphs to composing carefully crafted essays of varying types.

Students who successfully complete this course will learn to:
- Recognize the structure and function of the basic components of a variety of texts.
- Build writing skills useful for a range of academic and technical fields.
- Compose a variety of texts, using the knowledge acquired in this course.

Students will be assigned regular homework and will also be expected to prepare for each class by reviewing relevant materials, as stipulated by the syllabus. According to university guidelines, students are expected to spend at least one hour per week preparing for class.

- In-class smartphone use is strictly regulated. During lessons, smartphones may only be used with permission from the teacher. Unauthorized use of smartphones in class will result in a 1% deduction from the student’s “Active Participation” score.
- The syllabus may be amended to reflect student needs.
- More than 3 unexcused absences from class will result in a final grade of “Fail”.
- In order to receive credit for this course the Academic Express assignment must be successfully completed.
- In order to receive credit for this course TOEIC must be taken (except 4th year students).
