Outline (in English)

【Course Outline】
International management theory is a general term to study how to lead to solutions to various problems associated with the internationalization of corporate management. Students learn about the challenges of corporate management by studying a wealth of case studies, including Toyota, All Nippon Airways (ANA), Tokyo Disneyland, Yoshinoya, and McDonald's. The purpose of international management theory is to learn about the realities of corporate management that are promoting globalization and to show how to avoid management failures from a social science perspective. What kind of companies are developing products overseas or conducting international marketing? How should Japanese multinational corporations, which face challenges such as currency depreciation competition among nations and cross-border human resource management, act? We will learn the basic concepts for thinking about these issues.
【Learning Objectives】
This class will provide an introduction to international management theory. We will study business administration and the basics of cross-border corporate management. In other words, it is necessary to discuss not only what management is, but also what a nation is. Through such lectures, students will learn the basic knowledge they will need to be active in international business in the future.
The goal of this course is for students to learn how multinational corporations are affecting modern society, to learn theories about multinational corporations, to gain a perspective on these trends, and to learn the fun of theoretical thinking. By understanding the economic policies of nations, students will gain a more long-term perspective. The goal is to be able to apply theories and insights of international business to reality by reading newspaper articles on international management in Japanese and English.
【Learning Activities Outside of Classroom】
Before participating in the class, you need to read the textbook "Introduction to Business Administration (2nd Edition)" and look up any terms you do not understand. It is necessary to understand the contents of newspaper articles in Japanese and English when they are distributed. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.
Textbooks:(1) Junko Harada and Haruo Horaguchi eds. (2019), Kokusai Keiei (International Business) (Kaitei shinban, 2nd Edition), Housoudaigaku kyoiku shinkokai, in Japanese.

【Grading Criteria/Policy)】
Grading will be based on a comprehensive evaluation of the following items. 
(1) Class participation (learning support system responses to the quiz in classes and/or assignment reports) (35%)
(2) Final exam (Written exam through the learning support system) (65%)
The students should attend every class in order to get higher grades.
