Outline (in English)

In this course you will acquire basic knowledge and skills related to English teaching methodology and second language acquisition. While learning about the qualifications required of English teachers at junior and senior high schools, you will cultivate communicative competence in English necessary for effective instruction in the near future. The course also has as its goal to develop the ability to think and act on your own initiative to grasp the current situation and solve problems by observing the instructional context and individual learners. We will review the theoretical foundations of English language teaching and deals with topics such as the history of English language education, language teaching methodologies, language learning styles and strategies, second language acquisition, the teaching of English as an international language, intercultural understanding, the Course of Study, lesson plans, and the use of ICT. We will also focus on practical aspect of communicative language teaching and deals with topics of direct relevance to classroom instruction, such as the teaching of four and integrated skills, grammar and vocabulary instruction, English education in junior and senior high schools, early childhood education and elementary education for English, and testing and assessment. Your work will be graded based primarily on your participation, reflective papers, and micro teaching. For this accelerated course, the preparation and review time of approximately 8 hours a week is recommended.
