Outline (in English)

It is said we live in a free society. In fact, in the political systems adopted by many nations, including Japan, freedom of thought, speech, and other freedoms are guaranteed by the Constitution. However, there are many situations in our society that are incompatible with freedom, such as abuse, peer pressure, black labor, etc. These situations are not only contrary to freedom, but are ironic and paradoxical consequences of a free society itself...?
In order to grasp these issues, it is essential to take a theoretical approach rather than merely following events superficially. In this course, we will systematically study each of the political theories that are important for thinking about freedom, and consider questions such as: do we really live in a free society, and if it has problems and limitations, how (or whether) can they be overcome?
