Outline (in English)

[Course outline]
People can learn to talk by the time they are 3-4 years old, but learning to read and write takes more time and effort. Meanwhile, building computers that can talk as fluently as people has been a continuing challenge. Why is this so? Taking these questions as a starting point, this course introduces students to the fundamental principles and cognitive mechanisms that underlie the processing of spoken language.
[Learning objectives]
Through this course, students should be able to describe the physical properties of spoken language and the mechanisms underlying how it is produced and perceived by humans. Students should also be able to analyze speech using appropriate software.
[Learning activities outside of classroom]
Students are expected to study the assigned materials, work on homework assignments, and prepare for the next class. They should also gain hands-on experience with Praat, a speech analysis software, by individually doing assigned homework using this software. The standard study time required before and after each class is 4 hours total.
[Grading criteria/policy]
Your overall grade will be determined based on class participation and regular homework (30%), homework using Praat (30%), and final take-home test (40%). As a rule, if you are absent for more than 4 classes or fail to submit the final test or the Praat homework without a legitimate reason, course credit will not be granted.
