Outline (in English)

Course outline
 In this class, basic knowledge will be explained mainly on narrative scroll from the Late Heian period to Kamakura period. Furthermore, I will explain what kind of techniques and expressions are used, and examine various issues such as the production date and the client. In the fall semester, lectures will focus on the question of what kind of society created what kind of visual image.
 Students will appreciate picture scrolls, understand techniques and expression, and grasp the current state of art history research in order to learn techniques for analyzing visual images from various angles.

Learning Objectives
 Become able to explain the basic knowledge of narrative scrolls covered in class, and be able to explain techniques and expressions.
 Become able to explain what kind of society produced what kind of visual image.

Learning activities outside of classroom
 The standard preparation and review time is 2 hours each. After the lecture, look at the reference illustrations so that the work and the work name match.

Grading Criteria /Policy
 Written exam 80% at the end of the semester, reaction paper 20%.
