Outline (in English)

 This class surveys the history of the United States in the 18th and 19th centuries. This year, the racial and ethnic norms and their influence on life and experience of contemporary America will be examined with special care. Students are expected to cultivate balanced sensibilities to differences of race and ethnicity.
 In this class, in preparing book reports, students are expected to learn how to write academic writing: format, vocabulary, and logic.
 Two book reports are required. One is on Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave (1845) and another on The Souls of Black Folk (1903). Both of them are the classics of African American Intellectual History. Students are expected to learn how to read literary text and social criticism as historical documents. Besides these two reports, students must submit a few historical maps during the semester. Reaction papers to weekly lectures are required too.
Students are expected to spend about 3hrs a week in out of class study.
 Book reports and reaction papers will be returned with comments. Grading are based on Map Studies (20%), Book Reports (60%), Reaction Papers (10%), Short Quiz (10%).
