Outline (in English)
Course outline: This course helps students acquire the basic skills and knowledge to read academic texts on western history written in English, by reading them closely.
Learning Objectives: The followings are the goals of this course.
- Students are able to understand accurately the meaning of English sentences.
- Students are able to understand accurately the structure and argument of academic texts.
Learning activities outside of classroom: Students’ study time will be at least four hours for a class. They are expected to make a translation of the assigned English text before each class meeting, and after the class to review their own translation.
Grading Criteria: Grading will be decided based on the preparation for each class meeting (30%), the reading comprehension of English texts (30%), term-end paper (20%), and in-class contribution (20%).

英語で書かれた西洋史関係の学術文献を精読することにより、読解に必要となる様々な基礎的技術・知識を学ぶ。

この授業の到達目標は以下のとおり。
・英文の意味を正確に理解できること。
・学術文献の構造や論理展開を正確に理解できること。

この授業は、古代ギリシアの民主政と現代の民主主義を比較して論じた英語文献を精読する。各受講生は、自身の担当として割り当てられたテキストの指定箇所について事前に日本語訳を作成・提出する。訳読担当以外の受講生は、提出された日本語訳を検討したうえで授業に臨み、訳語・訳文の正確性や文献の内容、あるいは、他の疑問点等に関して質問・コメントする。そのため、訳読担当者だけでなく受講者全員が毎回、訳読予定の範囲について十分に予習してくることが必要となる。
