Outline (in English)

In this lecture, the primitive and ancient history of Japan is explained through archaeology. The aim of the lecture is to learn when and how Japanese society was formed.

The lecture will give an overview of the period from the Paleolithic Age to the founding of the Ritsuryo State. Students will be able to survey the formation of Japan by considering archaeological data as well as the chronicle of Japan and the international situation at that time, and understand the picture of the society of primitive and ancient Japan.

It is advisable to prepare for and follow up the lecture by reading the textbook and references. It is advisable to download the prescribed lecture notes from "Hiroaki Furusho's Lecture Notes" in advance and use them for preparation and follow-up. Grading is based on 50 percent of the regular grade and 50 percent of the test (or report), for a total of 100 percent.

Students will receive a regular grade based on their level of concentration, participation, and progress in the lecture.

A 60-minute final exam will be given during the last class period of this course. Students may bring textbooks and notebooks for the exam, but no electronic devices such as smartphones or personal computers unless there are special circumstances. Details will be explained in class.
