Outline (in English)
In this class, we will explore the theme of the city by analyzing literary texts and films set in New York City. What are some of the characteristics of city life and how are they represented in these texts? There will be some lectures, but most of the class time will be devoted to students' active participation. Grades will be determined based on assignments, presentations, and participation (60%) and the final paper (40%).

「都市」をテーマに、ニューヨークにまつわる文学と映画を見ていく。ニューヨークの文化や歴史的背景をふまえつつ、都市に生きるとはどういうことなのか、また都市特有の文学とは何かを考える。授業後半では東京を舞台にした作品を通じて、都市文学への理解を深める。

The class revolves around students' presentations and discussions. There will be some lectures, but most of the class time will be devoted to students' active participation. Students will receive feedback on their work in class, via Hoppii, and during office hours.

Each week, students will read a novel, a short story, or a poem. They are expected to spend at least four hours preparing for each class meeting.
