Outline (in English)

As populations age globally, there has been a growing social and scholarly interest in ageing. Ageing does not simply mean 'old age', however. More broadly, it concerns the life course as an experience of/in time. And cultural and literary narratives contribute to, and are a significant part of, the cultural discourse of the life course.

Reading selected texts from the UK that are published since the 1980s, we will consider how they explore the life course and help us to reconsider our conceptions of it. We will learn key cultural and scholarly perspectives on and debates about the life course and analyse the texts in close relation to social and cultural contexts.

Although this course mainly focuses on the British context, it is hoped that students will gain insights that will be relevant to some other societies and literatures.

Students will typically spend 1-2 hours (excluding the time needed to read/watch an assigned text) to prepare for each class meeting.
- Before class discussion on the chosen text, students will be expected to have read/watched the text, completed a worksheet that will be provided by the instructor and researched on contexts that are relevant to the text.
- After the class discussion, students will be required to submit a response paper (approx. 800 characters).

Final grades will be decided on the following:
In-class participation & contribution (50%) and in-class term-end examination (50%).
