Outline (in English)

In this course, students will learn the process by which people listen to speech sounds, recognize words, and understand sentences from word sequences. In the first semester, students will learn an overview of speech sounds, the process of perceiving speech sounds, and experimental methods. The methods depend on statistics, psychology, and computer science. You will also experience how to construct experiments and analyze data.
The goals of this course are threefold: 1. to be able to explain the characteristics of speech sounds and the processes by which they are produced; 2. to be able to explain models of the processing where people perceive speech sounds; and 3. to be able to test hypotheses through experiments and simulations.
The class will focus on reading materials in rotation and hands-on practice. Feedback will be provided in each class, and in the 7th class, the understanding of the first half will be checked and supplemented. In the 14th class, that of the second half will be checked and supplemented. Grades will be based on assignments in classes (50%) + mid-term exam and final exam (50%).
