Outline (in English)
This course moves away from 'conversation' type speaking course and more towards helping students to become better able to talk about, explain and describe a fundamental part of Japanese culture: haiku and senryu - from an international perspective. Students will be required to give presentations at various points of the semester in which they take on the role of instructor to communicate an aspect of the haiku/senryu form. The course also involves the writing of original English-language haiku, although this will primarily be given as homework. Students will be required to share their haiku orally with the class.

授業の概要と目的(何を学ぶか)Outline and objectives
Goal
By the end of this course, students will be better able to talk about, explain and instruct others on haiku/senryu. They will also become adept at writing their own and sharing these orally with their peers.

その他の重要事項Others
* Students are responsible for keeping a tally of their own attendance/absences throughout the semester. The professor will not answer emails or queries sent through Hoppii regarding the number of times a student has been absent. It is vital that students understand the professor’s attendance policy: if a student is absent three times (unauthorized, that student will not be able to pass the course. This includes being absent for the first lesson. DO NOT EMAIL THE PROFESSOR IN ADVANCE OF AN ABSENCE OR POST-ABSENCE: Please wait until you return to class and speak directly with the professor. Punctuality is expected. 2x late = absent. If you are more than 15 minutes late, you will be recorded as 'absent', even when a 電車遅延証明書 is presented. If the train you tend to take is often delayed, consider taking an earlier train. If you often rely on 寝坊 as an excuse, consider asking a friend or family member to wake you up earlier.
* The professor does not accept - late or otherwise - assignments/homework by email.
* Smartphones/mobile phones must be left in bags. If you think you're going to need a dictionary, invest in one. Rather than taking photos of the board, take memos: you'll retain more information!
* Deadlines are deadlines: assignments submitted after the deadline (for whatever reason) will be ungraded.
* The content of this syllabus is subject to change at the professor's discretion.
* Occurrences of plagiarism are taken very seriously and will be dealt with accordingly.
