Outline (in English)
Building on the English language skills acquired in prior required courses, students will work on developing the type of language skills they will need to begin to ask, express, and debate their opinions on a series of general and social topics.

This is a pre-intermediate/intermediate course in oral English communication, aimed at building oral fluency, vocabulary, and the ability to discuss global topical issues in English in a logical and coherent way. Instructors will teach this course using communicative English language pedagogy and classroom practices common in English as a Second Language (ESL) programs at universities in English-speaking countries. So students are expected to advance all their language skills, however extra emphasis will be placed on speaking and debating skills.
到達目標Goal
This class is designed to introduce students to reading about and discussing a series of topics. Classroom activities will focus primarily on speaking and debating on topics working in groups of three or four students.
In each class, you will be asked to read a passage and answer questions on it interactively. Then you will be asked to give your opinion to three or four questions on that topic. You will be expected to explain one, two, or three reasons for your opinion.You will then discuss your opinion in the group.
The instructor will supplement the contents of each unit with videos and other study materials.

This class is designed to introduce students to reading about and discussing a series of topics. Classroom activities will focus primarily on speaking and debating on topics working in groups of three or four students.
In each class, you will be asked to read a passage and answer questions on it interactively. Then you will be asked to give your opinion to three or four questions on that topic. You will be expected to explain one, two, or three reasons for your opinion.You will then discuss your opinion in the group.
Various discourse themes related to life and study in the English-speaking world will be explored in depth. Students will be expected to not only participate in classroom activities but also find and analyze information from various forms of English media independently and complete weekly homework assignments. Special emphasis will be given to speaking skills.
Feedback will be given in class to students individually and in their discussion groups in real time in the class, and at the end of the class, as necessary. For those students who complete the optionl written component, the instructor will give additional feedback in class.

The standard preparatory study/review time for this class is four hours in total. Each class has a pre-reading assignment for homework and students are expected to discuss their answers in the following class. Students should make a note of unknown words or expressions in a B-5 notebook.

成績評価の方法と基準Grading criteria
Student evaluation will be based 100% on in-class performance in discussions.
If students do not try to actively debate in this class, they cannot hope to succeed in getting a good grade.
Students who miss more than several classes cannot expect to get a higher grade.
Students who miss more than four classes cannot expect to get a grade.
The instructor assumes students will attend all 14 classes as a matter of principle.
***Students please note: No more than 3 absences per term are allowed.
Any unexplained absence will disbar the students from an S grade.
Unexplained lateness (arriving more than 5 minutes late after class begins) will be noted.
Persistent unexplained lateness will result in grade penalization.

「英語表現演習(Writing)」(5)(6)(7)(8)、「英語表現演習(Speaking)」(5)(6)(7)(8)、「英語表現演習(翻訳)」(1)(2)と「Academic Writing」の春学期秋学期科目合わせて22科目については、英文学科指定の「定員」が設定されています。また、「事前抽選」を実施します。詳細はガイダンスおよび掲示で案内します。抽選が4月初頭(初回授業日よりも前)に実施されるので、必ず期日内に申請してください。基本的に、春学期と秋学期をセットで履修することになり、秋学期の科目も春学期に申請する必要があります。
「事前抽選結果」発表時には、定員に空きのある科目のリストも掲示します。それらの科目の履修を希望する場合は、必ず春学期の初回授業に出席してください。担当教員が選抜を行う場合があります。
