Outline (in English)
Speaking classes in university come, as you're likely aware, in many guises: debating the pros and cons of a particular resolution, speaking to pass tests (such as IELTS, EIKEN, TOEFL, etc), speaking to function or survive in particular scenarios (such as buying a train ticket in a foreign country asking for directions on your first trip abroad, talking about hobbies with a new friend on your study abroad programme, for example), and the discussion format in which students form small groups and talk about a range of topics such as the week's hot news stories or social issues.
This course focusses on "public speaking" but...
...the professor of this course believes that it is going to be like one that students have NEVER encountered before. There will be no Powerpoint presentations. There will be no monologues in the style of TED Talks, There will be no speech contests like those students took part in at secondary school or sixth form college* (quite often under duress**).
What there will be is plenty of poetry, providing opportunities for students to improve their public speaking through its recitation.
Students will encounter and engage with a range of poetry including Shakespearean sonnets, limericks, nursery rhymes and haiku.

Outline and objectives
Goal
By the end of this course, students will be more confident in, and better able to speak publicly by engaging with a range of poetry. Research has also shown that poetry aids memory, and this, along with fostering a greater appreciation for and understanding of poetry are the learning objectives/desired outcomes of this course.

/If the Method(s) is changed, we will announce the details of any changes. )
The professor will model specific recitations, and provide students with ample opportunities to practice recitation in small groups/pairs and individually. The course is one in which theory informs practice and practice informs theory. Students will be expected to "learn by doing", meaning the course is very much practical.

Textbooks
There is no textbook for this class but copious amounts of material will be provided, either on paper* or through Hoppii.
* As will be explained in the first class, research has shown that memorizing and recitation is improved when the material is read from paper rather than a screen, so distribution of material on paper will be the norm.
参考書References
There is no particular reference book for this course; rather the professor will highlight useful references on an ad-hoc and extrempaneous basis.

Others
* Students are responsible for keeping a tally of their own attendance/absences throughout the semester. The professor will not answer emails or queries sent through Hoppii regarding the number of times a student has been absent. It is vital that students understand the professor’s attendance policy: if a student is absent three times (authorized or unauthorized, i.e. for ANY reason) that student will not be able to pass the course. This includes being absent for the first lesson. DO NOT EMAIL THE PROFESSOR IN ADVANCE OF AN ABSENCE OR POST-ABSENCE: Please wait until you return to class and speak directly with the professor. Punctuality is expected. 2x late = absent. If you are more than 15 minutes late, you will be recorded as 'absent', even when a 電車遅延証明書 is
presented. If the train you tend to take is often delayed, consider taking an earlier train. If you often rely on 寝坊 as an excuse, consider asking a friend or family member to wake you up earlier.
* The professor does not accept - late or otherwise - assignments/homework by email.
* Smartphones/mobile phones must be left in bags. If you think you're going to need a dictionary, invest in one. Rather than taking photos of the board, take memos: you'll retain more information!
* Deadlines are deadlines: assignments submitted after the deadline (for whatever reason) will be ungraded.
* The content of this syllabus is subject to change at the professor’s discretion.
* Occurrences of plagiarism are taken very seriously and will be dealt with accordingly.
