Outline (in English)
There are vast differences between the form of haiku and senryu written in Japanese and those written in English, and this course, after exploring the origins and history of haiku and senryu, will draw students' attention to these differences.
The primary aim of this course is to foster an appreciation for, learn about - and write - English-language haiku and senryu. Students will be given opportunities to analyze and discuss haiku and senryu already written, and those of their peers in the class.
This course, while predominately a writing course, also involves speaking and reading. Students are also given opportunities to improve their analytic, critical thinking and presentation skills.

* Professor will show an example in the first class.
その他の重要事項Others
* Students are responsible for keeping a tally of their own attendance/absences throughout the semester. The professor will not answer emails or queries sent through Hoppii regarding the number of times a student has been absent. It is vital that students understand the professor’s attendance policy: if a student is absent three times (authorized or unauthorized, i.e. for ANY reason) that student will not be able to pass the course. This includes being absent for the first lesson. DO NOT EMAIL THE PROFESSOR IN ADVANCE OF AN ABSENCE OR POST-ABSENCE: Please wait until you return to class and speak directly with the professor. Punctuality is expected. 2x late = absent. If you are more than 15 minutes late, you will be recorded as 'absent', even when a 電車遅延証明書 is
presented. If the train you tend to take is often delayed, consider taking an earlier train. If you often rely on 寝坊 as an excuse, consider asking a friend or family member to wake you up earlier.
* The professor does not accept - late or otherwise - assignments/homework by email.
* Smartphones/mobile phones must be left in bags. If you think you're going to need a dictionary, invest in one. Rather than taking photos of the board, take memos: you'll retain more information!
* Deadlines are deadlines: assignments submitted after the deadline (for whatever reason) will be ungraded.
* The content of this syllabus is subject to change at the professor’s discretion.
* Occurrences of plagiarism are taken very seriously and will be dealt with accordingly.
