Outline (in English)

Course Outline: This lecture course takes up the theme of kaii (lit. ‘the strange and mysterious’). We will read works on this theme in the early modern literary genre of ukiyo zōshi, and related literary and theatrical genres. These works seem mysterious rather than immediately frightening upon first reading, but on closer examination are “terrifying” in their own right. We will also consider what features they share with contemporary horror stories, and what distinguishes them. We will use the original, illustrated print versions as much as possible, since their texts, written using kuzushi-ji with abbreviated and cursive characters, are not so difficult to read.
Learning Objectives: During this course, students:
(1) will learn to read kuzushi-ji characters as used in the original early modern editions;
(2) learn about the cultural elements depicted in the illustrations; and
(3) learn to appreciate the interesting and diverse nature of these works of the early modern period.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before class, students read the materials distributed in advance. There may be assignments and creative exercises given for submission by the next class. The standard learning and review time for lessons is 2 hours each.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Performance in class 52% (including short assignments, reaction papers, etc.); exam 48%.
