Outline (in English)

Course Outline: In this course, we will read waka poems in the ancient collection Man’yōshū (Collection of a Myriad Leaves) according to theme, and appreciate their means of expression.
Learning Objectives: The aim of this course is to help students acquire and understanding of the ancients’ view of the world. Students will develop the ability to interpret the poems of the Man’yōshū correctly, and, at the same time, learn how to approach classical works without being bound by stereotypes.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: After class, students should review the contents of the class in order to consolidate what they have learned, confirming that they can interpret the original classical texts in the handouts. Students are expected to deepen their understanding by reading references introduced in class, as well as other class-related literature as appropriate.
Grading Criteria/Policy: regular marks (20%), final exam (80%).
