Outline (in English)

Course Outline: In this course, we will read waka poems from Man’yōshū (Anthology of Myriad Leaves) sorted by theme. While confirming the historical background, methods of writing, etc., students will deepen their understanding of the waka expressions in Man’yōshū and the worldview of the ancient people.
Learning Objectives: By learning the terminology and grammar of the poems in the Man’yōshū in detail and confirming the ingenuity of the people of the time in composing and expressing waka, students will be able to approach the emotions of the authors of the poems.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: After class, students should review the contents of the class in order to consolidate what they have learned in their own minds. Students should make sure that they are in a position to interpret the original classical texts in the handouts. Students are expected to deepen their understanding by reading the references introduced in class and other class-related literature as appropriate.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading will be based on the following: regular marks (20%); final exam (80%).
