Outline (in English)

Course Outline: Santi Tangshi (Tang Poetry in Three Forms) is an anthology (494 poems) believed to have been compiled by Zhou Bi in the South Song Dynasty. It is known to have been read quite broadly in Japan during the Muromachi period. In this course, we will select and closely read exemplary poems from Santi Tangshi, and while appreciating their appeal, we will complete original translations by critically examining Japanese translations, as well as commentaries written in literary Chinese. In addition, we will learn about the social background, culture and customs during the Tang dynasty which formed the foundation for the creation of Tang poetry, as well as the forms and rules of Tang poetry.
Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, students will:
A. have acquired basic knowledge of Santi Tangshi;
B. understand the form and rules of Tang poetry;
C. have acquired basic skills for reading and understanding Tang poetry; and
D. be able to critically examine existing translations and notes and have acquired the ability to interpret Tang poetry in an original way.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students are expected to read the presentation material prior to each class. Study time will be a minimum of 4 hours per class.
