Outline (in English)

Course Outline: Following on from the spring semester, this course will explain the establishment of modern Japanese literature and its diversifying literary contexts, while focusing on literary works from the Taishō period to the present. The point of this course is not to have students memorize historical facts mechanically, but to understand the historical significance of major works and their relation to the present day, while referring to them in concrete terms. The course also attempts to relativize existing literary history from the perspective of women’s literature.
Learning Objectives: As in the spring semester, the goal is not merely to acquire knowledge, but to enable students to consciously consider the position and significance of individual authors and their works in modern Japanese history, and to read and understand literary works with attention to the background of the period and author.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before class, students should read through the appropriate sections of the designated books on literary history according to the contents of each session of the syllabus. Students should have an approximate grasp of the flow of the course. Prepare for two hours each time. Review the knowledge you have acquired in the lectures and improve your reading comprehension by reading as many of the works introduced or assigned to read in class as possible. Allow two hours for review of each lecture.
Grading Criteria/Policy: The grade will be determined based on an examination (70%) and an in-class mid-term test (30%), supplemented with appraisal of overall attitude toward the class.
