Outline (in English)

Course Outline: Through a historical study the Japanese literature of the Meiji era, students will learn about the generation of modern Japanese literature, the relationship between literature and society, and literary consciousness and theory. The point of the course is not just to have students memorize historical facts mechanically, but to understand the historical significance of literature and relationship with modern society by referring to specific works. The course also attempts to relativize existing literary history from the perspective of women’s literature.
Learning Objectives: The goal is not only to provide students with an overview of the modern history of Japanese literature, but also to enable them to think about the historical position and significance of individual writers and works in their own way. Rather than merely passively listening to lectures, students will be exposed to a great number of works, acquire the basic skills to interpret them, and develop the ability to perceive things from a variety of perspectives.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Before class, students should read through the appropriate sections of the designated books on literary history according to the contents of each session of the syllabus. Students should have an approximate grasp of the flow of the course. Prepare for two hours each time. Review the knowledge you have acquired in the lectures and improve your reading comprehension by reading as many of the works introduced or assigned to read in class as possible. Allow two hours for review of each lecture.
Grading Criteria/Policy: The grade will be determined based on an examination (70%) and an in-class mid-term test (30%), supplemented with appraisal of overall attitude toward the class.
