Outline (in English)

Course Outline: This is a lecture course on the history of Japanese literature from the Nara period (710-794) to the Heian period (794-1185). Students will read histories, poetry anthologies, diaries, and stories of these periods, and learn various research methods for approaching classical literature.
Learning Objectives: The objectives of this course are: 1. to learn about the formation, structure, expression, and background of classical literature; 2. to learn about perspectives and methods for researching classical literature; and 3. to understand classical literature in its historical and cultural context.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students are expected to read the listed textbook. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Evaluation will be based on a report exam (60%) and participation in class (40%), including reaction papers for each session.
