Outline (in English)

We study the elementary history of modern European philosophical thought. What we learn during the spring semester is the thoughts of the major philosophers who worked from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment of the 18th century before the philosopher Kant. On what questions the philosophers have discussed and how they've answered them will be examined. Our aim is to examine the meaning of modern Western civilization up to the present day and the problems it faces in the context of modern thought, with a view to the history of modern Western philosophical thought.

[Goal}
In terms of the Western thoughts of the great philosophers from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment of 18th century we acquire the abilities:
(1) to write appropriately about the ideas of the great philosophers.
(2) to write appropriately about the streams and relations of the ideas of the great philosophers.
(3) to consider the philosophical topics: human being, society, world, nature, cosmos and God.
(4) to consider the ideas of the great philosophers in association with the problems of our modern civilization.

[Learning activities outside of classroom]
The preparation (2 hours): To grasp the contents of the next lecture with the delivered materials and books for reference.
The brush-up (2 hours): To do the assignments on "Hoppii", review the lesson with the assigned essays returned and read the books for reference. To read the text of the great philosopher when needed.

[Grading Criteria / Policy]
The grades are given in terms of 1. the understanding of the thoughts of great philosophers, 2. the understanding of the streams and relations of ideas, 3. the understanding of the philosophical subjects, 4. the points of view from the modern civilization. In this regard the following two aspects are respected. (1) 70%: The score of the assignments on "Hoppii", the attendance and the attitudes. (2) 30%: The score of the final examination.
