Outline (in English)

[ Course outline ]
This course deals with Karl Jaspers’ philosophiy and the concept of “Gemeinschaft” (community). “Gemeinschaft” means not only various groups of people but also its “commonality” that unites members as one group. This commonality act as the structural element to creation of pluralistic community. But if it is forced on people, the community will become closed and authoritarianistic. Jaspers thought the idea of “existential community” of human beings as free individuals by his central concept of “Kommunikation” (communication). “Kommunikation” is coexistence with otherness through conflicts. Jaspers’ thought can be interpreted as the “philosophy of community”. The student will obtain basic knowledge about the Jaspers’ philosophy and the concept of “Gemeinschaft” as a philosophical issue by this lecture.
[ Learning Objectives ]
The goals of this course are to
(1) learn basic knowledge about the development and concepts of Jaspers’ philosophy.
(2) understand philosophical and contemporary problems of the concept of “Gemeinschaft” (community).
[ Learning activities outside of classroom ]
Before/ after each class meeting, students will be expected to have read the teaching materials and reference books. Your required study time is at least four hours for each class meeting.
[ Grading Criteria ]
Grading will be decided based on usual performance score (50%), and final paper (50%).
