Outline (in English)

The purpose of this course is to develop basic skills to read philosophical writings through Seneca’s texts and understand the ethics of the late stoics.
Seneca’s writings are plain and simple, yet full of the power of acute insight and wisdom, and his thoughts are built on the ancient Greek and early Stoic tradition. By reading Seneca’s reflections on the most ancient and philosophical question of how we should live, this course aims to develop the ability to read philosophical writings carefully and construct logical arguments, and build the foundations for the philosophical seminars of the following year.

Students are expected by the end of the course to understand the thoughts of Seneca, to construct their arguments logically through readings and discussions, and to explain them clearly in their own words.
Before each class meeting, students are to read carefully the relevant text of the next class and summarize what the text is arguing for. The group or individual in charge of the presentation of the day is to prepare a resume to be distributed. Required study time is two hours each before and after the class.
The grade will be decided on the following proportion. In-class contribution: 25%, Presentation: 25%, Term-end examination or report: 50%.
