Outline (in English)

(Course outline)
This course will provide lectures and exercises on restoration and management of infrastructures in the hydrosphere and the geosphere. Focus is placed on measurement and analysis for evaluating natural environment in inland waters and grounds, scientific tools for assessing resiliency and soundness of structures, collection and management of environmental information from mountainous and forested regions, strategies of mitigation and adaptation to global climate changes, etc.
(Learning Objectives)
The hydrosphere and geosphere that consist the river basin are regional units that share social conditions such as culture, climate, and economic activities, water circulation and ecosystems. In order to create a sustainable society, it is necessary to ensure the safety and security of the hydrosphere and geosphere, and to regenerate the national land by using the watershed area as a framework for regional formation. Comprehensive and specialized knowledge at the level of practical engineers necessary for forecasting and evaluating external forces of natural disasters, robustness, redundancy, and resilience of social systems against wind, flood, and earthquake disasters, and hard and soft measures against environmental loads in the hydrosphere and geosphere. The goal is to acquire practical knowledge and develop practical problem-solving skills from an engineering perspective.
(Learning activities outside of classroom)
In preparation for the presentation and question-and-answer session of the exercise, students should collect information from literature and books according to the theme of the lesson plan. The standard time for preparation and review for this class is 2 hours each.
(Grading Criteria /Policy)
Grades will be evaluated based on the exercise report (50 points allotted), the presentation of the summary results, and the report (50 points allotted).
