Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
The aim of this course is to learn about infrastructures in civil engineering and skills for their strategic assessment. Practical knowledge and skills obtained from this course can be applied to actual projects. By acknowledging infrastructures in civil engineering by group analysis, and by simulating how an infrastructure can exist over a medium to long term span, considering its invested maintenance and operation cost, one can study strategies required for the current state.
At the same time, topics such as typical degradation and damage of infrastructure, inspection methods and diagnostics, performance prediction, reinforcing and retrofitting, planning of management and their PDCA cycle will be discussed in class. By understanding both medium-to-long term and short period plans, one will be able to acquire the overall picture of infrastructure management, the elemental technology of each process, and the importance of a PDCA cycle.
By taking this course, students will become highly qualified engineers, being able to perform operation and management of infrastructures in civil engineering efficiently and give guidance as a specialist.

【Learning Objectives】
Learning Objectives are as follows:
⓵To be able to properly understand the current situation and challenging issues that infrastructures are facing. ②To acquire inspection/diagnostic techniques in order to confirm conditions of infrastructures. ③To understand what kind of deformation (damage and deterioration) will occur to already-existing structures and trace its cause ④To acknowledge the types of deterioration and its causes, and understand the progression rate of deterioration from an engineering or statistical point of view. ⑤To understand the essence and keystone of medium to long term maintenance management plans and short term restoration programs of infrastructure ⑥To understand management technology concerning infrastructure from construction to operation and maintenance, repair, reinforcement and renewal. The final objective is to understand ①~⑥, to refine it as your own skill, apply it in practice, maximize job performance and become a leading engineer that has the ability to perform one's duty with clear explanations with a sense of ethics.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Prior learning is advised, concerning the current situation and challenging issues of infrastructure and the asset management method, both domestic and international.
Students are recommended to study in advance using lecture materials that will be disclosed beforehand and to be able to ask questions to be clarified during the lecture and increase their depth of understanding throughout the lecture. Lecturer will set 2 assignments (approximately) during the course, and presentation materials will have to be submitted as assigned reports. Time for preparation and review per class will be an average of one hour respectively.

【Grading Criteria /Policy】
Overall grade in the course will be decided based on the following:
1. Evaluation on presentations of exercise achievements: 40%
2. Assigned reports (2 reports assumed): 30%
3. Evaluation on ones’ status of supporting the course :30%
