Outline (in English)

Course outline:
Structural design is the creative act of drawing out the appropriate framework that a building structure should have. Structural design is not only related to science and technology, but also to many other things. Aesthetics, history, culture, philosophy, ideology, economics, and so on. Structural calculations, which are generally thought of as structural design, are just a way to add the finishing touches to this activity and prove that the structure is strong and sound enough to meet the requirements. Before entering such a stage, it is necessary to construct a basic structural concept based on an integrated judgment, which is structural planning. In this class, we will study the examples of famous structural designers and experience the flow of structural design from structural planning to structural calculation through the design of actual structures.

Learning Objectives:
The course aims to cultivate the ability to understand basic structural principles and the words of famous structural designers and other experts for structural planning, to grasp the technical standards related to structure in Japan, and to understand structural design and structural calculation methods that conform to these standards, and in the process, to touch the essence of structural design.

Learning activities outside of classroom:
Independent study outside of class time is very important, such as literature research, structural model making, preparation of materials for presentations, and preparation of structural design documents and study for them. In the class, students are mainly expected to explain the progress of their work and confirm any questions they may have. The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

Grading Criteria/Policy:
Grading will be based on in-class presentations and final reports.
