Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
In the structural design of architectural and urban structures, it is important to select the most appropriate materials after examining various performance requirements such as structural strength, durability, fire resistance, environmental performance, and cost. To achieve this, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of each material and to learn engineering methods to construct structures that take advantage of these characteristics. In this course, we will focus on "structural materials" and explain their manufacturing methods, processing methods, mechanical properties, and various other performances with actual examples. The objective of this course is to acquire basic knowledge to understand the design of steel, reinforced concrete, and wood structures, which are particularly important in modern structural engineering.

【Learning Objectives】
To understand the manufacturing and processing methods of structural materials.
To understand the mechanical properties of structural materials, such as stress-strain relationships.
To understand the durability and fire resistance of structural materials.
To understand the outline of construction methods utilizing the characteristics of each structural material.
To understand the plastic properties of structural materials and their energy absorption performance up to fracture.
To understand the practical examples of structural design utilizing the characteristics of structural materials.
To understand the design methods that combine the advantages of different structural materials.

【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Students are required to review the class textbook and to engage in self-study using reference books, etc.
The standard self-study and review time for this class is 2 hours each.

【Grading Criteria /Policy】
There will be three tests in the lecture and the grading will be 30% for the first test, 30% for the second test, and 40% for the third test.
