Outline (in English)

【Course outline】
In recent years, earthquakes of seismic intensity 6 or higher have occurred frequently. In the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake, the 2004 Niigata-ken Chuetsu Earthquake, the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake, and the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, tremors of seismic intensity 7 were observed, which exceed the assumption of the seismic resistance regulations stipulated in the Building Standards Law.
Such huge earthquakes may occur anywhere in the future, and designers have a responsibility to protect the lives of occupants against such severe seismic motion and to make their lives sustainable even after the earthquake. In this course, students learn how to calculate the bearing capacity of buildings, the deformation performance of earthquake-resistant members, and the calculation of the horizontal bearing capacity stipulated in the Building Standard Law, and understand the importance of earthquake-resistant design methods and their basic concepts.
【Learning Objectives】
To understand the outline of the calculation method for the horizontal bearing capacity stipulated in the Building Standard Law and the calculation method for the bearing capacity and deformation performance of buildings.
To understand the importance of seismic design methods by studying damage caused by past earthquakes.
【Learning activities outside of classroom】
Exercise assignments will be presented on topics requiring focused practice.
The standard preparation and review time for this class is 2 hours each.
【Grading Criteria /Policy】
A mid-term test will be given three times in the lecture, with 30% of the first test, 30% of the second test, and 40% of the third test allocated for grading.
