Course Theme: Reading Literature in Wartime
Course Outline: As in the past, judging whether literary people resisted war during wartime is not the only way to understand wartime literature. For example, Dazai Osamu and Nakajima Atsushi, with whom we are familiar, vigorously published their works during the period of only eight years between the start of the Sino-Japanese War, the enactment of the National Mobilization Law, and the defeat of Japan. Of course, they were not pandering to war. But why do their works have the universality that allows them to be read to this day? With these questions in mind, we will reconsider what literary people thought and tried to express during wartime.
Learning Objectives: In this class, we will focus on wartime works that are still read today, such as Ibuse Masuji’s Henrōyado, Dazai Osamu’s two works, Fugaku hyakkei and Matsu, Hori Tatsuo’s Arano, and especially Nakajima Atsushi’s two works, Sangetsuki, and Riryō. Although it is difficult to capture the author’s message from works published under severe censorship, students will learn to explore the possibilities of wartime literature in the modern age, while gaining a careful understanding of the expressive structure of each work and its relationship to the wartime situation.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students are expected to have read each work before the class in which it is discussed. They should also try to gain a broad grasp of the circumstances of the time, by revising the history of the war years and post-war years.
Grading Criteria/Policy: written reactions to the works and comments on the content of each lecture (50%); final examination (50%).
