Outline (in English)

Course Outline: This course provides an overview of the history of literature by reading poetry anthologies, diaries, and stories produced during the Nara (8th century), Heian (8th-12th centuries), and Kamakura (12th-14th centuries) periods. At the same time, students learn various research methods to approach classical literature. We will examine "unresolved issues in the history of research" that are still being debated and the theories that are still being updated.
Learning Objectives: The goals of the course are the following three points:
- To understand the formation, composition, expression, etc. of classical literature.
- To understand the viewpoints and methods for studying classical literature.
- To learn to view classical literature in the context of historical trends.
Learning Activities Outside of the Classroom: Students will be expected to read the books introduced in class. Preparation and review time will be 2 hours for each class.
Grading Criteria/Policy: Grading will be decided based on a mid-term report (36%), a final report (36%), and reaction papers for each session (28%).
